Responsible gambling in South Africa

The ground rules

• Betting is for people 18 and older. It is a criminal offence in South Africa for an operator to let a minor gamble, and every licensed bookmaker must verify your age (that's part of what FICA verification is for).
• Betting is entertainment, not income. The odds are built so the bookmaker keeps a margin. Nobody wins over the long run except the operator — anyone selling you a "guaranteed system" is lying to you.
• Only bet money you can afford to lose completely. If losing the money would affect rent, food, transport, or debt payments, don't bet it.
• Never chase losses. The most damaging betting behaviour is increasing stakes to "win it back". That's how entertainment becomes a crisis.

Warning signs to take seriously

• Betting with money meant for essentials, or borrowing to bet
• Hiding betting from family or lying about how much you spend
• Chasing losses with bigger stakes, or betting to escape stress
• Failed attempts to cut back, and irritability when you try
• Thinking about betting most of the day, or betting at work

Self-exclusion

Every licensed South African bookmaker must offer self-exclusion: you instruct them to close or suspend your account, and they are obliged to enforce it. You can self-exclude directly with each operator (look for "self-exclusion" in their responsible-gambling or account pages, or email their support and keep the email as proof). The NRGP can also guide you through excluding from multiple operators, and formal exclusion under the National Gambling Act can be arranged through the courts for the most serious cases.

Practical damage-control tools

• Deposit limits: most licensed SA bookmakers let you set daily/weekly/monthly caps — set one the day you open an account, while you're thinking clearly.
• Bank-side blocks: some SA banks let you block gambling merchant categories on your card — ask yours.
• Time and money tracking: decide the month's entertainment budget before the month starts, and treat a finished budget as finished.

We only list provincially licensed operators, we publish honest payout-testing data, and we will never tell you a bet is "guaranteed", promote betting as a way to make money, or aim any content at under-18s.
